Ali is a respected psychotherapist and loyal wife. Then suddenly a complaint of sexual misconduct by a male former client throws her professional and personal life into a maelstrom of suspicion and distrust.
Who is lying? Is anyone telling the whole truth? Against a background of contemporary blame culture, Ali finds herself struggling to maintain her reputation and her marriage, and as the threats keep rising, her instincts are tested to the extreme.
Playwright and director Matthew Campling‘s previous stage credits include The English Heart and Abominations, which was nominated for Best New Play in Broadway World’s 2016 UK Awards.
“Unfailingly charming and endearing” – A Younger Theatre on Abominations
Campling is also a former psychotherapist. The Secondary Victim is inspired by personal experiences. Susannah Doyle stars as Ali, along with Gary Webster, Natasha Bain, Michael Hanratty, Matt Holt and Christopher Laishley.
As someone who was falsely accused of sexual harassment at work myself, and who fought – and won – a two-year legal battle to clear my name, I feel a very personal connection to the material too. I’m really looking forward to discussing the issues with Matthew and The Secondary Victim company after the evening performance on Tuesday 21 November 2017.
